The Active Transport of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide into the Swim-Bladder of Fish

چکیده
I N T R O D U C T I O N During the experiments with their bathyscaphe P6r£s, Picard, and Ruivo (1958) at a depth of 2200 m observed fishes (Halosaurus johnsonii) which floated. These fishes have therefore the same density as the surrounding water. T h e density of a fish without a gas-filled swim-bladder is practically independent of depth and it is a few percent higher than the density of the surrounding water (Denton and Marshall, 1958). A fish with a gas-filled and closed bladder, however, is as a Cartesian diver at a depth in an unstable equilibrium of floating. According to Borelli (1679) fishes should control the volume of the swim-bladder by muscular activity. But this view is in contrast to several experimental findings (Moreau, 1876; Jacobs, 1930, 1932, 1940). Morphological studies (Jaeger, 1903; Marshall, 1960) showed that the rete mirabile (Delaroche, 1809; Woodland, 1911;Krogh, 1922; Scholander, 1954; Wittenberg et al., 1964), the gas gland (Muller, 1840), and the oval (Winterstein, 1921; Ledebur, 1929) of the bladder are organs which may be involved in the secretion (Bohr, 1894; Jacobs, 1932) and the resorption (Moreau,

The Secretion of Oxygen into the Swim-bladder of Fish I I. The simultaneous transport of carbon monoxide and oxygen
ABSTRAOT Toadfish, Opsanus tau, L., were maintained in sea water equilibrated with gas mixtures containing a fixed proportion of oxygen and varying proportions of carbon monoxide. The swim-bladder was emptied by puncture, and, after an interval of 24 or 48 hours, the newly secreted gases were withdrawn and analyzed. Both carbon monoxide and oxygen are accumulated in the swim-bladder at tensions...
متن کاملThe Secretion of Oxygen into the Swim-bladder of Fish I. The transport of molecular oxygen
Fish were maintained in sea water equilibrated with a gas mixture containing a non-equilibrium mixture of the three molecular species of oxygen, O18-O 18 (mass 36), O18-O t6 (mass 34), and Ole-O 16 (mass 32). Analyses in the mass spectrometer, of the gases secreted into the swim-bladder showed that no change in the relative abundance of these three molecular species had occurred during the secr...

متن کاملTHE ACTIVATION OF CARBON DIOXIDE AT A MAGNESIUM (1 00) SURFACE THE ROLE OF OXYGEN TRANSIENTS
X-ray photoelectron and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopic (XPS-HREELS) studies have shown that the adsorption of carbon dioxide at Mg(100) surfaces at 80K is followed by a dissociative reaction leading to the formation of a metastable surface carbonate above 80K. The formation of a carbonate species is proposed to proceed through oxidation of C0 (g) by an active oxygen su...
متن کاملیافته علمی کوتاه: بررسی وضعیت کیسه شنای ماهی گیش کاذب (Lactarius lactarius)
The swim bladder status of false trevally (Lactarius Lactarius) was studied from November 2007 to October 2008 in coastal waters of the Oman Sea. A number of 702 swim bladders of false trevally specimens were collected randomly from catch composition of gillnets and bottom trawler. False trevally has an unusual swim bladder, as the first and the second spines of its anal fin are joined that cre...
